New Garmin 696 Arrives

October 31, 2008

I just heard about the new Garmin 696 Portable GPS. The product is available on Sporty’s, where there is a nice demo video.   The unit has all of the expected features of the 496 including XMWX, terrain, AOPA Airport database.  New features include TIS input and NOS Approach Plates (no word on Jepps).

The 696 is scheduled to ship 11/5 and will retail for $3296, according to the Garmin site.

I am super impressed and hopeful, though I have not yet seen one in person (with AOPA next week, we’ll all get our hands on one soon).

Mostly I like the portablility and (finally) the chance for a really well integrated paperless cockpit.

I’ll post more after AOPA. In the meantime, have a look.

Pilatus Fever

October 25, 2008

I was lucky enough to experience a PC12 this weekend, and sadly, I’m not sure my flying will ever be the same.  The plane was enormous inside, super fast up high, insane amounts of power in climb, but landed at 80 knots like a dream. It also was among the lightest workload as a pilot I’ve ever witnessed or experienced.  Automation and intelligence on steroids.  The Swiss have an incredible winner here.

Someday, I can hope!

I couldn’t resist posting a couple more from a picture perfect weekend in Wyoming.  This is why we fly.

Spectacular day for a flight – Photos

October 18, 2008

Decided to head up to Jackson for the weekend with the family given exceptional October WX across the western US.  It was truly one of those insanely beautiful days to fly.  . . and we were alone up there. 3 hrs from Bay Area to KJAC, and only light chatter on the freqs (then again we were at 210).  The family seemed to approve.  . .. Blue Angels Photos from SF

October 12, 2008

This is by far my favorite weekend to live in SF.  Actually almost every weekend is perfect for flying here, but this weekend is perfect for the Blue Angles to fly here.  Each year on Columbus day weekend they perform two shows (and practice the thursday and friday before).  The Bay never dissappoints. . with great weather, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the Bay Bridge providing a great backdrop.  This year I watched two shows:  Saturday right near the Ferry Building (near the Bay Brige), and Sunday on the opposite side of the Bay, just under the Golden Gate.  What can I say, they rocked the house.  Here are some pics:
